The Week in Geek has been published since 1997, and now has a home at WeekInGeek.com. I suppose that makes it one of the oldest continuously published blogs online – a blog before the term ‘blog’ was coined. The WiG is published regularly, but is not always weekly. In the summer hiatus it becomes more of a ‘Month in Geek’, and during particularly busy parts of the semester there may be only two WiGs a month. Many of the articles posted in the Week in Geek support material in my book “Information Systems: A Manager’s Guide to Harnessing Technology“, which is available online for non-commercial use, and is published in print form by Flat World Knowledge.
I’m a Professor of Information Systems at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. The courses and seminars that I teach and the research that I conduct are focused on understanding the intersection between business and technology. I focus on questions like ‘How do you compete when technology can be copied and the competition is a click away?‘, and ‘What role does tech play in determining winning vs. failed businesses?’. It’s a fun space, but it’s constantly changing, so I need to read widely to keep up. I use the Week in Geek to share links to content and ideas that I hope others will find interesting. The WiG started as a way to keep in touch with former students, but now has subscribers from Bombay to Baharain.
I currently teach our foundation course in technology and management (podcasts and course are online at www.gallaugher.com). I also lead the field study courses to Silicon Valley, Seattle, and Asia where I have the pleasure of introducing our students to senior tech executives, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists. I’ve done executive education and consulting work for several organizations, including Accenture, Alcoa, Brattle Group, ING Bank Worldwide, Partners Healthcare, Patni Computer Systems, Staples, State Street, and the U.S. Information Agency, and I’ve partnered with Duke Executive Education, Syracuse University, and University of Ulster. My comments on business and technology have appeared in The New York Times, National Public Radio, WCVB-TV, The Seattle Times, the Associated Press, ComputerWorld, eWeek, The Daily Yomiuri (Japan) and The Nation (Thailand), among others.
Thanks for reading & if you’ve enjoyed the WiG or have suggestions, please send an e-mail!
